Thermoluminescence dating (TLD) measures the accumulated radiation dose in crystalline materials, such as ceramics or burnt flint, since they were last heated. Over time, these materials absorb radiation from their surroundings (e.g., from cosmic rays, the sun, and radioactive elements in the soil).This radiation knocks electrons loose within the material, and some of these electrons get trapped in the imperfections of the crystal structure. The older the samples, the higher number of trapped electrons. When the samples are heated, the trapped electrons are released and emit photons (luminescence).<\/p>\n\n\n
